Fire on Horse Island
At 6:18 PM we were dispatched to assist Oak Island Fire Department with a fire on Horse Island. That is the island between Davis Canal and the beach, and is only accessible by boat. We, along with a good Samaritan boater, helped firefighters get on the island, transport their gear, and pull a fire hose across Davis Canal. The fire itself covered a large area, but was a ground fire and not in the canopy of the trees. This resulted in a lot of smoke but very little flame.
Pulling the hose across Davis Canal was challenging due to the very strong current, and like many calls we had to improvise a little. The end result was excellent and the fire was quickly contained and extinguished.
We would also like to thank Sean, the Town of Oak Island’s drone pilot. In addition to our drone (video attached), he was also able to fly his drone, which is equipped with an excellent Infrared camera, and made sure there were no remaining hotspots.
