Oak Island Water Rescue and Oak Island Fire Department were dispatched to the beach in the area of SE 40th Street for a report of a boat possibly in distress about 200 yards offshore. The caller reported the boat waving a red flag. We arrived with a crew, two 4×4 trucks, and our surf-launch boat 4491. After speaking with the fire department and watching the boat drift west, we decided to launch the boat. Upon arriving at the boat, we were told they were not in distress and were actually kite fishing. What the reporter had thought was a red flag was a fishing kite.
