Thunderstorm Swimmers
Just prior to 7:00 pm (during a thunderstorm) Oak Island Water Rescue, Oak Island Fire Department, and Oak Island Police Department were dispatched for a report of a swimmer in distress at the Oak Island Pier. United States Coast Guard, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, and NC Marine and Fisheries Marine Patrol were also alerted.
The nasty weather didn’t deter us and we responded with all three vehicles and the surf boat. Units arrived to find that two persons had been in trouble in the rough surf, and scraped up, but were safely on the beach. First aid was given on scene but hospital transport was not required.
The surf is very rough this evening so please stay out of the water. Also, never swim or remain on the beach during a thunderstorm. We could see lightning bolts striking the water, which is extremely dangerous for a swimmer.
