Tragedy Yesterday in Emerald Isle
Tragedy yesterday in Emerald Isle. While not local news, this story highlights the danger of swimming in rough water. The surf was reported to be between 6-9 feet and there was a High Rip Current warning. The United States Coast Guard has announced they are ending their search.
The male swimmer disappeared and the female swimmer was pulled from the surf by the fire department. Although lifesaving treatment was rapidly started, the female remains in critical condition (according to a social media post by a family member).
While it is too early to know the contributing factors, rip currents and strong shore-break are common in those conditions.
