Two Young Men Missing on Kayak
We were dispatched, along with Oak Island Fire Department, to the area near SE 67th Street just before 5:30 PM for a report of 2 young men on a neon green kayak that could no longer be seen and their parents were concerned for their safety. We were advised by their father that they were wearing life jackets. We located them about 150 yards from the shore, though they were hard to see due to the waves and ocean conditions. They did not appear to be in distress, so we waited on the beach with our surf-launch boat at the ready, for them to return.
Our Assistant Chief spoke with them about the importance of wearing a PFD despite them being excellent swimmers. They were doing the right thing, at their mother’s request.
