Unicorn Raft Rescue
Today Oak Island Water Rescue, Oak Island Fire Department, Oak Island Police Department, United States Coast Guard, and other area marine law enforcement agencies (North Carolina Marine Patrol and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol) were dispatched for a child on a unicorn float/raft that had been blown by the wind into deeper water.
It was reported that at least one person had unsuccessfully attempted to swim to the child. Oak Island Fire Department arrived on scene and was able to see, using binoculars, the raft several hundred yards off shore. Oak Island Police Department Beach Patrol was also on scene.
Oak Island Water Rescue Boat 4491 arrived on the beach and quickly launched into the surf. Boat 4491’s two person crew secured the child and unicorn float. The child was placed in Boat 4491, outfitted with a PFD and helmet, and safely brought back to the beach. The young man was gently placed into the arms of his mother.
